Rep Spotlight: Barbara Smith of Barbara J Sales

Barbara Smith knows that strong representation starts with strong relationships. As the founder of Barbara J Architectural Sales, she has spent decades building trust across the architectural cladding market — and that trust has helped create meaningful opportunities for CEI Materials, including helping secure The Bridge District, CEI’s largest plate job to date, through her relationship with PCC Construction Components.

Barbara’s career began in customer service on the glass side of the industry before she moved into outside sales. That early experience shaped the way she approaches business today: with responsiveness, accountability, and a clear understanding that how you treat customers matters just as much as what you sell.

Barbara has represented CEI Materials for approximately five years. She was originally recommended to cover the D.C. corridor and quickly saw the opportunity to bring CEI’s capabilities into a market that values service, speed, and quality. For Barbara, one of CEI’s biggest advantages is proximity. Michigan-based fabrication means one-day delivery for much of her region, which gives customers a level of accessibility and confidence that matters. She also points to CEI’s private ownership, broad product mix, and hands-on support as differentiators in the field.

As Barbara puts it, a rep can open the door, but long-term success depends on what happens after the sale. Sales, estimating, quoting, project management, and final product quality all shape whether a customer comes back. In her view, CEI stands apart because the company takes care of its customers — and that builds repeat business.

When asked what CEI strength is most valuable, Barbara points first to quality. If customers like the finished product, they come back. Just as important, she says, is accurate, timely quoting that makes life easier for estimators and contractors. The easier CEI is to work with, the more likely customers are to keep specifying the brand.

So what has helped make her successful as an independent rep?

What she enjoys most about representing CEI comes back to the people. She values the support she receives when she needs it, the range of product offerings she can take to market, and the confidence she feels bringing customers through the CEI facility. She’s proud of what CEI produces — and thankful to be part of it.
