Rising thirty stories high in downtown Bethesda, Maryland is a new iconic structure called the Elm, a 1,000,000 square foot mixed-use property. “The Elm is the tallest building in Bethesda and an extremely complex project that has taken over five years to complete,” explains Steven Lee, Senior Façade Technical Designer at Shalom & Baranes Associates (SBA) in DC. The neutral tones of the residential high-rise are juxtaposed by the glass curtain wall of the office façade.

Yet, the Army Barracks in Powderly, Texas goes a step further, showcasing the fusion of essential function and contemporary design. Designed by Base4 Architecture, the new Army Barracks building is entirely modular, clad in an interlocking panel system with the Army’s signature camouflage color palette.

Groundbreaking began on NASA Langley’s largest laboratory in April 2017. The nearly 96-million-dollar project in Hampton, Virginia is part of a revitalization plan for NASA Langley that will replace and repurpose the site’s facilities. “The Measurement Systems Laboratory will be a world-class facility for research and development of new measurement concepts, technologies, and systems that will enable NASA to achieve its mission in space exploration, science, and aeronautics,” Michael Finneran of NASA Langley Research Center explains.
